Lucky town scoops €15m of El Gordo jackpot

Spanish LotterySpanish lottery players from the small town of Sort, whose name translates from Catalan as Luck, have won prizes totalling more than €15m in the country’s Christmas draw. Wednesday’s game, known as El Gordo (The Fat One, in English), had a total prize fund of €2.3bn. It is the largest jackpot of any lottery in the world, although the money is usually shared by a large number of people.

According to a report by The Telegraph newspaper, the winning number this year was printed on 195 tickets. Thanks to its name, Sort is understandably a popular place to buy lotto tickets and this year the town has certainly lived up to its name.

Tne reason why the El Gordo jackpot is shared between so many players is that a single ticket costs around £179. As a result, people tend to form lottery syndicates in order to club together and enter the festive draw.
