Mega Millions Lottery

MegaMillions is, along with Powerball, one of the ‘big two’ multi-state lottery games in the US and is played in 43 different states along with the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Draws take place twice a week on Tuesday and Friday nights. The Mega Millions jackpot has a base value of US$12 million and if no player wins the jackpot outright it rolls over to the next draw. This rollover feature has helped to create some extremely large Mega Millions jackpots in the past, including one in March 2012 that was worth US$656 million.

Buying MegaMillions Lottery Tickets

To play MegaMillions you need to select five main numbers between 1 and 56 and one Mega Ball number between 1 and 46. If you don’t want to select your own MegaMillions numbers then you can take advantage of an Easy Pick option instead, where your MegaMillions numbers will be selected at random.

Whichever way you pick your MegaMillions, you will need to match all six of them to win the Mega Millions jackpot. The odds of doing that are 1 in 175,711,536, but if you match fewer numbers you could still win one of eight non-jackpot Mega Millions prizes, as the following table illustrates:

The overall odds of winning any of the prizes offered by MegaMillions are 1 in 40.

Players in some US States can choose to increase the value of any non-jackpot prize by taking advantage of the Megaplier feature. This is similar to the Power Play option in Powerball but with the Megaplier prizes can be multiplied by two, three or even four times. Exercising the Megaplier option involves paying an additional fee, but when you consider that it could help a US$250,000 MegaMillions prize winner walk away with US$1,000,000 there is no doubt that the extra fee could pay off!
