Mega Millions Lottery

The Mega Millions Lottery is, along with Powerball, one of the ‘big two’ multi-state lottery games in the US. Mega Millions is currently played in 40 different states and draws take place twice a week, on Tuesdays and Fridays. The Mega Millions jackpot has a base value of $12 million and if no player wins the jackpot outright it rolls over to the next draw. This rollover feature has helped to create some extremely large Mega Millions jackpots in the past, including one in March 2007 that was worth $390 million.

To play the Mega Millions lottery game you need to select five main numbers from the range 1 to 56 and one Mega Ball number from the range 1 to 46. If you don’t want to select your own Mega Millions numbers then you can take advantage of an Easy Pick option instead, in which case your Mega Millions numbers will be selected at random on your behalf.

However you pick your Mega Millions numbers, you will need to match all six of them to win the Mega Millions lottery jackpot. The odds of doing that are 1 in 175,711,536, but if you match fewer numbers you could still win one of eight non-jackpot Mega Millions prizes, as the following table illustrates:

The overall odds of winning any of the prizes offered by the Mega Millions lottery game are 1 in 40, and players in some states can choose to increase the value of any non-jackpot prize that is won by taking advantage of a Megaplier feature. This is similar to the Power Play feature that Powerball players can exercise, but the Megaplier feature multiplies the Mega Millions prize by 2, 3 or 4 times, as determined at random. Exercising the Megaplier option involves paying an additional fee over and above the Mega Millions ticket price, but when you consider that it could help a $250,000 Mega Millions prize winner walk away with $1,000,000, there is no doubt that the extra fee could pay off handsomely in the right circumstances!

One Ticket Scoops Mega Millions Jackpot

Last night the Mega Millions had its first draw of the week and there was a $71 million jackpot available to win. The results from this Tuesday night draw reveal that one winning ticket matched all five of the main numbers along with the Mega Ball to take home the Mega Millions jackpot. The owner (or owners if it is a syndicate) identity is yet to be revealed, however the desired winning ticket was bought in the participating state of Georgia.
